Ryan's 1971 Super Beetle

This car started life on September 3, 1970, a month after production began on the new model year. It was shipped to Canada and originally sold at the Valley Autohouse VW dealership in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where is spent the first few years of its life. After changing hands in the late 70s, it found its way south and ended up in Covina, Calif., where my dad bought it for me four days before my 16th birthday on April 8, 1989. He paid $1800 for it, incidentally the same price for one year of insurance for a 16-year old driver. After using it as a daily driver for three years, it was parked in my parents' driveway while I went to college. There it sat for 15 years until it underwent the 18-month restoration project you've seen on the pages of VW Trends magazine and in the pages of my new book, The Volkswagen Super Beetle Handbook.
