Return of the Sun Bug - Owner: Ahmed Shah

For Ahmed Shah, the idea of owning another air cooled Volkswagen felt like a chapter long closed. After decades of moving around the world and cycling through an astonishing number of vehicles, he had quietly accepted that his air cooled days were behind him. "I honestly thought I was a Toyota truck guy now," he said, laughing at how far he'd drifted from the VW world he once loved. Fourteen cars during six years in Okinawa, four more in Monterey, and countless others since his first beloved 1967 Bus had pushed nostalgia into the background. But life has a way of circling back when you least expect it.

That moment arrived in late February, when a 1974 Super Beetle Sun Bug appeared on Facebook Marketplace. The asking price seemed high for an original, unrestored late model Beetle, yet Ahmed found himself returning to the listing again and again. "I must have looked at it twenty times," he admitted. Curiosity finally won, and he reached out to the seller. That message led him to York, Pennsylvania, where he met the woman who had owned the Sun Bug since 2010. She had endured difficult years that kept her from driving at all, but the car remained safe in her heated and air conditioned garage, lovingly maintained by her older brother. "She's a sweet lady, and now a good friend," Ahmed said.

What he found was nothing short of remarkable. The Sun Bug had only 23,000 miles on the odometer, and nearly every part appeared original. The tires looked new despite being thirteen years old, and the battery had survived a decade thanks to a trickle charger. Even the spare tire, jack, and tools were unused. "It's the epitome of preservation," Ahmed said. Since purchasing the car in March, he has already driven more than 1,250 miles, nearly tripling the annual average mileage the car saw over its entire fifty two year life. "In three months I've driven it as much as it was driven in three years. And it drives like a top."

Once the Sun Bug was home, Ahmed focused on essential safety updates. He took the car to Deno Stiles, a well known East Coast VW specialist, to replace all rubber fuel lines and remove the plastic fuel filter from the engine bay. Deno was just as impressed as anyone who sees the car. Ahmed installed new tires, a fresh battery, and a replacement Lemmerz GT Sports wheel to preserve the original unused spare. The battery tray received careful treatment with rust reformer, flex seal paint, and flex seal tape. "I'll keep an eye on it, but it's solid now," he said.

The interior, however, told a different story. The Sun Bug's limited edition brown vinyl seats with golden corduroy inserts had survived decades of storage, but not decades of grandchildren bouncing on them. The foam collapsed, springs pushed through, and the corduroy suffered. "I winced when I saw the photos," Ahmed admitted. Local upholsterers were either too busy or uninterested, so he ordered complete upholstery from JBugs. The headrest foam alone cost $250, a price he still laughs about. "What is up with that?" he said. But the goal is preservation, not customization, and the new covers will restore the interior to its original look.

Despite the work ahead, Ahmed sees the Sun Bug as a car to preserve, not transform. Its originality, condition, and history make it a rare survivor among late model Beetles. "I want to enjoy it for as long as I can and then pass it on," he said. The car has already spent half a century looking this good, and he sees no reason to change that now. The Sun Bug represents a moment in Volkswagen history that deserves to remain intact.

Looking forward, Ahmed dreams of eventually finding a Ghia or a Type III Notchback to customize, but the Sun Bug will remain untouched. It is a time capsule, a survivor, and a reminder of how the right car can bring someone back to a passion they thought they had left behind. For Ahmed Shah, the Sun Bug isn't just a Beetle; it is a return to something familiar, something joyful, and something worth preserving for the next generation.
