Peter's 1971 V8 Beetle

In the early seventies while an Engineering Student at University of Michigan I read about an interesting Bug sleeper made by Paul Newman (actor) in Hot Rod Magazine. The car was a convertible body on an Indy Car tube chassis with 351 cid Ford Mustang engine and ZF trans axle in the back seat. I really like the idea of a great handling sports car with lots of go (HP), all in a sweet VW convertible body to make it a real sleeper!

At the time I had little money to make the car myself but did spend a semester at school designing the prototype of what I have today. After my graduation from U of M I worked for General Motors at their test track in Milford Mich. And Ford Motor Co. at their Engine Engineering center in Dearborn, Mi. Now that I have the money and time to make the car I decided to build the Vette powered bug you see here. I started the project in September 2000 and finished it December 2000. Well not really finished, I am still working on it now. The car was built by me in my garage with a hammer, hack saw and heli arc welder! It is a stock 1971 VW body with one piece glass front end, custom chassis with a 2000 GM ZZ-430 5.7 L crate engine. The V8 powerplant puts out 450 FT-LBS of torque and redlines at 7000 RPM.
