Bruce & Rajeane's 1974 Super Beetle

We purchased our '74 Super in 1990 to tow behind our motor home. The beginning with our fifth VW was a rather auspicious start as the prior owner disappeared with the original cushy seats, radio and some of the engine goodies that were there when we bought the car (long story). We had our Dub, which we named "Otto", painted teal. The guy did not do a good job but he apparently had personal problems and he disappeared too We found out later "Otto" was originally VW yellow but had a purple trunk deck and a red left fender and driver's door, not to mention an "outie" in the roof where someone in the back seat tried to put their head through it. In 1998 California after several years of passing their smog tests, decided that his engine would no longer pass their emissions requirements. Apparently we had a '73 motor instead of a '74 and there weren't enough hoses and holes to suit them. The engine was a '73 but the body was a '74 so we had to follow '74 regulations. Sacramento advised me I wasn't "allowed" to put a '73 engine in a '74 body???? (another long story) Meanwhile "Otto" sat for a year. After we retired and toured the western USA for five years we decided to restore Otto to good order. He now sports a brand new pearl teal paint job, a black interior and headliner, a 1641cc engine with dual Scat carbs, Pertronix ignition and coil, new bumpers, chrome ribbed running boards and vintage 1960's era Empi Sprint Star wheels with 195x50 R15 tires. It's been a hectic but fun ride with "Otto" these past 15 years and we wouldn't change a thing. Recently we entered "Otto" in a local car show and won "Best In Show" ~~ sure torqued off some boys with the big money cars. We were a bit surprised when "Otto" won, but I don't think he was. After all people know "real" class when they see it.
